The Opportunity

After raising capital in 2022, Hence, an early stage startup, sought to fuel growth. Uniquely built on top of Palantir and with offices in the US, UK, Netherlands and Rwanda, Hence offers advanced data integration capabilities to in-house legal teams helping them transform the way they collaborate internally and work with external law firms.

My Role

Leading on commercial objectives and the implementation of go-to-market strategy.

Onboarding digital marketing, PR, research, sales outreach and other advisors to build a new customer pipeline.

This included:

  • Establishing a targeting strategy focused on Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 companies with complex legal demands, as well as other intermediaries and influencers across the US, UK and European legal industry.

  • Designing and delivering a sales strategy that understood buyers’ needs and placed emphasis on enterprise account profiling, engagement planning and measurement.

  • Conducting research with 150+ General Counsel, Chief Legal Officers and Heads of Legal Operations to sharpen product development and support thought leadership in order to drive inbound audiences.

  • Launching new branded assets such as: pitch decks, website, digital and social assets including videos, podcasts and more.

  • Speaking at conferences in the US, UK and Africa.

  • Pursuing partnerships geared to enabling sales and evolving the platform.

Results

  • Met objectives to target a set number of high quality pitches and trialists - notable given the early stage of the startup, intense competition, and some of the most difficult trading conditions ever post-pandemic. 

  • New pilot customers secured included major enterprises from the: private equity and investment funds, advanced manufacturing, software, healthcare, retail plus automotive industries.

  • Winner 2023 Zurich Insurance Global Innovation Championship, prevailing over 3,500 startups, with its software that matches lawyers to insurance claims in real-time, driving material savings.

  • From January 2024 Hence co-Founder, Sean West, begun distributing “GeoLegal Notes”, a weekly newsletter exploring the intersection of law, politics and technology.

  • In May 2024 Hence was selected (out of 230 applications from 28 countries) to join one of the world's largest law firms, A&O Shearman's, Fuse programme, a unique legal tech incubator fostering innovation with top tech firms and creating client-focused digital legal solutions.

  • In May 2024 Hence co-Founder, Sean West, was featured in the Financial Times sharing his perspectives on the role of General Counsel in the context of rising geopolitical risks.

  • Successfully delivered June 2024 “GeoLegal” roundtable exploring how geopolitics & tech is creating risks. This exclusive event sold out featuring following speakers: Matthew Layton (former Global Managing Partner of Clifford Chance); Ian Thompson (C-suite insurance exec); Elliot Hentov (Macro Policy Head at State Street); Reena SenGupta (RSGI); Lisa Hart Shepherd (Lamp House Strategy); and Julia Hayhoe (NED Specialist Risk Group). CEOs & Founders, General Counsel and law firm Managing Partners and Board-level lawyers plus other thought leaders attended this private, interactive session that took place prior to the LegalTechTalk conference in London.

In 2022 visiting the Hence product development team, who operate from Kigali, Rwanda, a highly regarded tech hub in Africa, when the company announced its successful USD $1.8 million fundraise from various institutions and angel investors (which brought total amount raised to USD $2.6 million).
